Summer Enrichment Program
Posted July 19th, 2008 by PhilipI have just completed an exciting two weeks working with the Summer Enrichment Program hosted by UNC. SEP is a two week long summer camp on the campus of UNC (Colorado) for gifted (super smart) students in grades 5-10. Each day the students rotate between 4 elective classes with titles like Guerrilla Art and Trash Culture all culminating on the second Friday with a smattering of presentations, displays, artwork, dance and musical performances for visitors and parents.
I am currently teaching two courses at SEP, three classes of Black and White Photoraphy and one class of Film and Video Production. This is the first time that I have had the opportunity to actually teach in a classroom environment and it has been an incredible challenge to say the least. The experience is similar to learning how to swim by being thrown into the deep end of the pool.
Second session starts on Monday in as many ways that I am dreading the though of going back, I am also looking forward to the opportunity to improve upon my experience during the first session. Don't get me wrong - first session was still a complete success, the photography students made great pictures and the video production students finished making their movies (here: http://www.journeymm.com/sep), but it wasn't the smoothest running operation.
Beyond improving my lesson plans I really hope to improve the way that I interact and challenge my students - particularly because (now I realize) these kids really are way above average, incredibly smart, and very talented!
Just to follow up - Second
Just to follow up - Second session was a complete blast! Thank you to all of the amazing students that I had in my photography and film/video production class - you guys made it fun!
I have no idea where I will be in a year - but if I happen to still be in the Greeley area, I might just have to sign up for another 4 weeks with the SEP. (could I really do 4 film/video classes?)
Phil you are an unbelievably
Phil you are an unbelievably amazing teacher, and I am going to miss you so much. You helped my last year of SEP be my best, and I would like to thank you from the tips of my toes to the crown of my head for that. Don't tell any of my other teachers, but in the six years I've been at SEP you have been my favorite teacher. Keep glowing, even if you don't come back.
